Book 2 Chapter 11

Origin of the Chapter's Title[]

The title 满院春风,惆怅墙东 is two lines from the poem To Ts'ai Sang-tzu (IX) (采桑子其九) by Feng Yansi (馮延己), a Tang Dynasty poet.

满院春风,惆怅墙东 can be translated as:

Filling the courtyard, a spring breeze

Mournful and forlorn east of the wall.[1]

The context of the two lines in its passage:

By a tiny house, secluded and quiet, where no one ever comes,

Filling the courtyard, a spring breeze.

Mournful and forlorn east of the wall,

A cherry tree covered with blossoms, pink and touched with raindrops.[2]
